Rust caught my attention about three years ago now, and my preferred rusting technique is direct printing with rusty objects, no two prints is ever the same. I’m fascinated by the colours and patterns produced in the prints, the unpredictability and uniqueness in every print inspires me. Since I was already hooked on fabrics and the various ways you can make fantastic surface designs to them, it was just another tool for the toolbox for creating my unique and very personal fabrics for my art work.

Fabric isn’t just fabric therefore I’m always on the lookout for some interesting fabrics and I have fallen in love with old linen table cloth which you can be lucky to find at the thrift shops. These table cloths have had a life and sometimes it shows, but that only makes them even more valuable to me, they take the dye beautifully and the weaving stands out in the most fantastic way.

Ice dyeing is just another unpredictable and unique technique for surface design, you never get the same result twice and there’s so many different ways to go about it for various results.

This series is like a travel through my soul and my process is very intuitive and often gives surprising results, results I had no chance of predicting. I think of rust as a family trauma “bleeding” through to generation after generation, but even an ugly trauma can end up beautiful.

Unpredictable seems to be a red thread from start to finish in my process, it wasn’t always like that, but now it seems to be the main ingredients. I can’t help but think that if it can get me this excited, it could be that others would like it too.

Using stuff, I’ve found or have been given, has become a key element for me in the making of this series anyway. Everything I do stems from a need to find meaning and purpose with the moods and feelings that is within me and has been from the beginning.

Life is unpredictable, good or bad, I’m trying to use that fact creatively.
